| Neighborhood Accountability Board (NAB) |
The Neighborhood Services Division is working with the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Probation Department on a vital community program called Neighborhood Accountability Boards or NABs. The NABs bring first time juvenile offenders into structured dialogue with members of the community in which the crime was committed. Each conference lasts 60-90 minutes and involves the youth, his or her parent(s), a probation officer, and three members of the local community. The aim is for the youth to understand the community impact of the crime (such as graffiti, vandalism, public intoxication, burglary, shoplifting, etc.) and for the group to develop a plan to repair the harm done. If the youth completes the plan, she or he is diverted from the criminal justice system and has no record. The likelihood of a repeat offense is dramatically reduced. This program is offered bilingually. For more information, please call the Neighborhood Services Division at 763-5678. |
